The diversity of the flora of Vietnam 26: Contribution to the inventory of the orchid species composition in Bat Dai Son Nature Reserve, Ha Giang Province

Last modified on 13/2/2009 at 10:30:00 AM. Total 2109 views.

Bat Dai Son Nature Reserve (BDSNR) is situated in the northern most part of the limestone area of Ha Giang Province. Plant diversity is still poorly known. The goal of our study is to make a preliminary inventory of species composition of orchids in Bat Dai Son Nature Reserve and assess their conservation statuses in order to plan the sustainable utilization of this important group of plants. Primary forests on slopes of mountains have long been destroyed completely and replaced by corn fields. But forests with the dominance of conifers on ridges of limestone mountains, usually from 800 to 1200 m have suffered slightly from logging activities and forest fires. The species composition and diversity of orchids in this type of forest are extremely rich. From 1999 to the present, we have organized ten field expeditions, in which 301 collecting numbers of orchids were made. They belong to 119 species and 48 genera, representing about 32% the total number of species of orchids in Vietnam. The genera with the highest number of known species are Bulbophylum, Eria, Liparis, Dendrobium, Pholidota, and Coelogyne. Several species new for science such as Eria foetida Aver., Liparis pumila Aver., Renanthera citrina Aver., R. vietnamensis Aver. & R. Rice were described based on specimens collected here. Anoectochilus calcareus Aver., Cheirostylis bipunctata Aver., Eria boniana (Gagnep.) T. Tang & F.T. Wang, Eria foetida Aver., Liparis pumila Aver., Phaius tonkinensis (Aver.) Aver. and Renanthera vietnamensis Aver. & R. Rice are local (narrow) endemics. Almost all species of genera Paphiopedilum, Renanthera, Bulbophyllum, Dendrobium, etc. have high economic value as ornamentals. Many of them have high conservation values and have been listed in Appendices of CITES or in Decision 32/2006/ND-CP. More than 1/3 of inventoried species is threatened, among them 17 endangered species (Cheirostylis aff. marmorataCoelogyne malipoensis, Dendrobium cariniferum, Liparis aurita, Nervilia punctata, Paphiopedilum henryanum, Paphiopedilum hirsutissimum, Paphiopedilum malipoense, Paphiopedilum micranthum, Phalaenopsis mannii, Phalaenopsis lobbii, Renanthera citrina,  Renanthera vietnamensis, Rhomboda petelotii, and 28 vulnerable species.
