Con Dao National Par was founded in 1993 with an area of 19,990 ha. The fauna and flora of Con Dao are rather high. Con Dao Islands consist of 16 Islands covered by vegetation with canopy more than 80%. There are 1077 plant species belonging to 640 genera, 160 families, and 6 vascular plant phyla. There are 160 wild terrestrial animals belonging 64 families, 32 order, and 4 classes in Con Dao. Among them, 29 mammals, 85 bird species, 38 reptile, and 8 amphibian species. There are 1516 sea water species, of which 46 mangrove species, 127 seaweed species, 11 sea grass species, 157 ephemeral vegetation species, 116 ephemeral animal species, 342 coral reef species, and many species of different groups.
Con Dao has three main ecosystems which are mangrove ecosystem with 32 ha, seaweed ecosystem with 600ha, and coral reef ecosystem with 1000ha. Conservation of biodiversity plays an important role for sustainable development of Con Dao. It not only has significance in keeping balance of environmental conservation and unique natural values of the area but also significance in educating, supplying food, medicine plant resources, and eco-tourist development in Con Dao.
