Study on Peristrophe bivalvis (L.) Merr. in Muong Khuong district, Lao Cai province

Botanical characteristics, ecology, distribution, cultivation, care and harvesting of Peristrophe bivalvis were studied. There are four forms of Peristrophe bivalvis in Muong Khuong district, Lao Cai province. The heat extraction method of violet colorant from Peristrophe bivalvis is the best. Violet colorant is mainly distributed in the leaves of this plant. Using column chromatography method and analysis by HPLC/MS revealed that major chemical composition of violet colorant extracted from Peristrophe bivalves is anthocyanine including constituents with pelargonidine and pyranopeonidine chemical structures, such as: Afzelechin(4-8) pelargonidyl glucoside, Pelargonidine-3-O-gentiobiozơ and Pelargonidine-3-O-sambabiozơ and 4’-sucxinoyl-3-rhamnozyl-(4H, 5H)-pyranocyanidine. Peristrophe bivalvis is a potential source of natural violet colorant. Climate and soil in mountainous regions in Vietnam are very suitable for growth, development and colorant accumulation of this plant.
